You are buying a specific room or property on specific dates, plus whoever answers the phone when the boiler fails at 22:00. On villas and small properties the second half matters more than the first: the difference between a good and a bad week is usually the local manager, not the pool.

Price moves on dates and length of stay far more than on the property itself. A villa at €4,200 in the last week of August is often €2,400 in the third week of September for identical weather, and most owners quote seven-night blocks with a fixed changeover day.

For rentals, look for a tourist registration number displayed on the listing — most European regions now require one — and written confirmation of who holds the security deposit and on what terms it is returned.

Booking from photographs and a map pin without asking about the last 500 metres. Steep unlit access tracks, a shared drive, or a road that a hire car cannot pass are all common and never appear in the listing.

Accommodations covers hotels, villas, bungalows, and within that the quality gap is wider than the price gap. Two companies quoting within 10% of each other can differ entirely in whether the service is operated in-house or subcontracted to whoever is available that week.

Château and vineyard access is relationship-based. Estates that take no public bookings will take a small group from an operator they have worked with for a decade.

Ask what happens if the tightest connection in your plan fails, and listen for a specific answer rather than a reassuring one. Ask what is deliberately not included in the price. Ask when the quote expires and why — a release period is a real deadline from a supplier, not a sales tactic, though it is sometimes used as one.

In France, one thing to raise specifically: assuming rail flexibility. French high-speed fares are yield-priced and largely non-refundable at the cheap end, so a "we will decide later" itinerary costs materially more than a fixed one.

Companies pay for access to matched leads, which is why comparing is free for travellers and why no commission is added to the price a company quotes you. Paid placement exists and is labelled wherever it appears; it does not rewrite the organic match order.

The ranking model uses destination coverage, service category, party size, budget band and current response performance. Companies that answer quickly and get chosen see more volume; companies that leave requests unanswered see less, whatever they pay. Those inputs are published rather than hidden, because a marketplace that conceals its ranking rules ends up selling them.
