You are buying a person for a number of hours, and the difference between guides is larger than in any other category on this site. A licensed guide with twenty years in one city is a different product from a guide who is competent everywhere and exceptional nowhere.

Half day versus full day, language, and whether the guide holds a site licence for the specific monument. Restricted sites — the Vatican Museums, the Alhambra, Pompeii — require an accredited guide and that accreditation is priced into the rate.

National or regional guide licences are legally required in Italy, Greece, Spain, Austria and several other countries. Ask for the licence number and the issuing region — a guide licensed for Lazio is not licensed for Campania.

Booking a guide and separately booking tickets, then discovering the entry slot does not align with the guide hours. Let one party own both, or accept that you will lose an hour to it.
