The difference between a good trip to Greece and a frustrating one is rarely the itinerary on paper. It is whether the company running it has staff, contracts and licences inside the country, or is coordinating by email from somewhere else and marking up a local supplier it has never met.

Island accommodation is small and family-run, so allocation is personal rather than contractual. Operators with long relationships get rooms in August that no booking engine shows.

When you shortlist companies in Greece, two questions separate the two kinds quickly: which services are operated in-house rather than subcontracted, and what happens if a transfer fails at 6am. The specificity of the answers tells you almost everything.

Late April to mid June and September to mid October give island weather without August crowding. Ferry frequency drops sharply from November, which reshapes what an itinerary can include.

Budget expectation matters as much as timing. Mid to upper-mid programmes in Greece typically run €150–400 per person per day, higher in Santorini and Mykonos, excluding international flights. Naming a range in your request is not a weakness — it is what lets a company quote something concrete rather than opening with clarifying questions.

Ferry cancellations from wind. A schedule that assumes a same-day island hop with a flight connection is the itinerary most likely to fail, and buffer days are cheaper than rebooked flights.

On guiding specifically: Licensed guides are legally required at major archaeological sites including the Acropolis, Delphi and Knossos. This is one of the reasons the licence check exists — an unlicensed guide is a legal exposure for the traveller as well as the operator.

Greek operators hold an EOT licence number, and legitimate ones publish it. Verification confirms the number against the register rather than accepting it as text on a website.

Verification is re-run annually and immediately on any substantiated complaint, and expired insurance suspends a listing automatically. What it does not do is guarantee taste, guarantee the lowest price, or replace the financial protection that package travel rules and your payment method provide. Saying so plainly is the point: a badge that quietly implies more than it checks transfers risk to the traveller while collecting the credit.
